Town Lowers Flags to Honour Children Buried at Former B.C. Residential School

The bodies of 215 children were discovered on the former Kamloops Residential School grounds in B.C.

“The discovery has shocked and horrified our community, our country, and the world,” said Kingsville Mayor Nelson Santos.

To acknowledge this tragedy and honour the 215 indigenous children who lost their lives, Kingsville will lower flags at all municipal buildings for 215 hours, 1 hour for each child, starting Monday, May 31, 2021.

“We are collectively mourning this loss,” said Santos. “Lowering our flag represents a purposeful pause to recognize that our indigenous communities are hurting and need healing. It’s our time to listen to their call and offer solidarity by uplifting their voices.”

The flags will remain lowered until Tuesday, June 8, 2021.
