About Jack Miner

Jack Miner was both a hunter and a conservationist. He had a great respect for the importance of wildlife and its natural environment. Wild Goose Jack, as he became known, is considered to be the father of conservation. His work began both Canada’s conservation movement and our waterfowl refuge management system.

The Sanctuary had its origins in 1904. Jack started banding ducks in 1909, and Canada geese in 1915, so as to gather information every season on the migrating birds. He attached a Bible verse to each band.

The Miner house and museum have been dedicated to the work that he began for migratory birds. Even after the Migration Festival is over, the  house and museum tours are available on Saturday and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Appointments for other times are available. To book a tour, please call (519) 733-4034 or email at questions@jackminer.com
