Art Scoop: The Great Migration Paint-OUT and Grovedale Event

The first Great Migration Paint-OUT hosted in Kingsville turned out to be a huge success. Out of 30 paintings at the Grovedale Arts and Culture Event on October 18, seven were sold totaling $2,000 in sales! Sixteen artists were registered at this event. Two did not compete. Seven were considered professional artists. Eight had never done a plein air painting competition before. Eight submitted three paintings, the maximum number allowed.

Several artists received commissions to do paintings as a result of the show. There were 136 votes in for “People’s Choice.” Approximately 150 people came to the show.

The weather started off very iffy, but the rest of the weekend was beautiful. That said, a couple of artists were feeling the cold.

Ed Roach, owner of Sissy & Roche in town, was particularly cold down at the lighthouse right next to the Grovedale Arts and Culture Centre, the venue for the show. He was very grateful to borrow Johnnie Dutton’s jacket. He even had to go to the show early so that his hands would thaw in time to sign his canvas.

Another one feeling the bite was Val Read, who very cleverly parked herself right opposite her home to paint the reflection of her house through a stained glass window of the church. She enjoyed wonderful perks of hot coffee and hot soup for lunch brought over by hubby.

Andrea Kubis got permission to paint a barn at a local farm, but on the day she was painting there was nobody answering the door. She felt like a naughty intruder sneaking around. Hee hee!

Here you can see Andrea’s painting in progress. She was painting a grain mill which is located near the Arner townline.

It’s always funny when you go to visit someone painting and their view is compromised half-way through a painting. That’s what happened to Randy Bryan when a big boat anchored up right in front of him. Luckily he had already got down the salt hills behind the boat.

Elizabeth Gaye McDonald posted videos of herself in the countryside, live, which is always a hoot. Elizabeth was one of the artists who not only managed to sell a great piece of art but she also got a commission from someone else who wanted the same painting.
