Back to school time is coming. With that in mind, members of Ontario Provincial Police West Region have issued a media release reminding drivers to watch out for school buses and students. Slow down when you see a school bus and keep your distance, because buses can stop without much warning when they let students on and off.
It’s a serious offense if you don’t stop for a school bus that is flashing its red lights and has stopped. A first-time fine can range from $400 to $2,000, and you can end up with six demerit points added to your licence.
Witnesses can report on vehicles which have gone past a school bus illegally in Ontario. Even if you’re not the driver, if you’re its registered owner, you may have to pay the same fine as the driver.
We all have a responsibility to keep our children safe. So be vigilant and patient when they are back out there on the way to and from school.
