Off the Shelf: Back to School Edition

A New School Year

To say that this school year will be different is an understatement! So much uncertainty and stress but, the library can help make it a little easier. We would like to highlight some resources that will make it a bit easier for teachers, parents and students!

Teachers

Class Visits
Our staff always look forward to September and class visits. What a thrill when we get to sign up our youngest community members for their very first library card! Unfortunately, we cannot have group gatherings in the library at this time but that doesn’t mean parents can’t get a card for their child.

We have created a form that a parent can fill out and within a week receive the library card in the mail. If this is something that you would like to offer your parents, please send your request to: mdenes@essexcountylibrary.ca

Book Bundles
We’ve heard from teachers that a class library is no longer a possibility. Essex County Library to the rescue! Themed book bundles available for you to come in and pick up at your leisure. Quick in and out service because we know how valuable your time is to you! Bundles can be season related, all about animals, friendship—the topics are limitless!

Digital Resources

Kanopy Kids
We’ve talked about Kanopy Kids before for parents but it’s a wonderful resource for teachers as well! Kanopy Kids features a collection of films and TV series that inspire and inform, helping children develop social emotional skills and reinforcing valuable learning topics, such as history, science, and new languages.

Kanopy Kids has a diverse selection of educational and entertaining content that range across Movies, TV Series, Animated Storybooks, Live Action, and Animated favorites. Appropriate for children ages 2 and up, with a focus on kids aged 2-8.

Explora for Elementary Schools
Designed with students and educators in mind, Explora provides a safe, trustworthy environment for students to look up articles and facts for research papers, class projects or homework. A far better alternative to websites and search engines, Explora provides students with easy-to-use features and age-appropriate content from the world’s leading magazines and reference books.

Kids InfoBits
Kids InfoBits feature a developmentally appropriate and visual graphic interface, a subject-based topic tree search and full-text, age-appropriate, curriculum-related magazine and reference content. Target Grades K-5.

PebbleGo
PebbleGo, the award winning PreK-3 database for reading and research, offers two specific databases for early readers. With hundreds of topics and content areas, PebbleGo Animals and PebbleGo Earth and Space will entice the youngest of readers to explore and learn independently.

Service Update

The Tecumseh branch re-opens Monday, September 14. Our slow and steady approach is proving successful and we look forward to seeing you at the Kingsville branch soon! What services will be available to you?

  • Holds pick-up (no appointment required)
  • Printing
  • Public computer use (1 hour per day)
  • Limited visits to 30 minutes per day

We remain closed as a gathering place at this time. Patrons will be asked to self-screen at the door, social distancing is expected and the wearing of a face mask is mandatory.

So, keep placing those holds for curbside pickup and delivery by mail.
