Pelee Island

Over the Lake: Find Your Beach

While many beaches across the province may be experiencing higher than normal volumes of people looking to get outdoors, most beaches on Pelee Island remain quiet, natural and undisturbed. High water and wind direction certainly affect beach conditions on Pelee Island, and contribute to the ever-changing landscape on our shores.

Pack your picnic basket and a towel. Leave only footprints and take only photographs on the Top 5 Pelee Island Beaches:

1) Fish Point Provincial Nature Reserve — McCormick Road

A moderate walk through the woods past rare plants and bird life opens up to the southernmost sand point in inhabited Canada. Butterflies are your company as you walk to one of the most Instagrammable sites in Canada.

TIP: Follow a newly cleared path marked by flags through the woods.  The beach path is not passable. Swimming is not recommended at the tip due to strong undertow. Limited parking.

2) Lighthouse Point Provincial Nature Reserve — End of East Shore Road

The iconic lighthouse still stands where it was built in 1833, guarding the northeast corner of the island. Battered by high water and wind, the trails have sustained substantial damage; though work to repair the main path is underway. The trail is currently closed – watch for updates.

TIP: Stop and look around at Lake Henry as you approach the Reserve entrance.  An incredible place to catch a sunset and view shorebirds.

3) Brown’s Beach — East Shore Road

Located in Middle Point Woods on Nature Conservancy of Canada lands. Best accessed by bike/ foot. A small, shaded clearing provides a good picnic spot and gives way to a small beach that stretches both east and west of the trail.

TIP: Avoid this beach in high East winds

4) East Park Beach — East Shore Road across from East Park Campground

The largest public beach on the island has the added benefit of being in close proximity to public amenities at the campground. A modest store, garbage receptacles and bathroom nearby make it easy to set up for an afternoon in the water. Ample parking.

TIP: Find the happy face rock for another Instagrammable moment!

5) Sunrise Beach — East Shore Road

Very small beach that offers an excellent spot to catch the sunrise or take a morning dip.

TIP: Driftwood treasures pile up here. Happy hunting!

If you’re hunting for your own private beach, Pelee Island has options. It is important to note that all beaches are natural and not manicured. There are no lifeguards on duty. Signs reminding you to stay out of rough water are located in places where there is a known undertow. Water samples are not taken at any beaches on Pelee Island.
